Let me start this post with explaining that I have the best sister in law. She pays attention to everything I mention and then it somehow just pops up at Christmas or my birthday from someone in their family. My trench coat was one of those items. I can’t remember if I was only dating my husband or engaged but this was the first time I realized that all gifts are mother in law and sister in law approved. I had mentioned to her on a shopping trip for sunglasses how much I’ve always wanted a classic trench coat and of course that Christmas one popped up under the tree. My Burberry Brit trench coat is a classic staple. They are super expensive (the Brit label starts around $600 and actual Burberry is over $1000) but they will never go out of style. I’ve been wearing my trench coat for 4 (or 5?) years and still get compliments on it. Its a class beige color with gold metal buttons and the classic button and tie pattern. If you’re going to invest I suggest going the timeless route. Of course, when I win the lottery I plan to get in season trench coats in every style imaginable. A few things to keep in mind about trench coats. 1. Buy a color that compliments your skin tone. There are a lot of different colors you can go with. While they all look “beige” you can go more yellow or more brown with it to better compliment you skin undertones and it will make a big difference on how you feel in the coat. 2. Buy the correct length. I learned this the hard way. I’m only 5’3″ and my coat hits just at the knee. I love it when I wear heels but hate the length when I’m in flats (good thing I wear heels 90% of the time). You can get a length anywhere from your mid thigh down to the ground. Go with what works for you! 3. Embellishments. Get embellishments to match your day to day. Trench coats are typically more casual wear so if you’re always in gold jewelry why not have the buttons and clasp match? It you love leather do a leather lining or shoulder patch. This is the best way to differentiate yourself from every other pumpkin spice latte lover in the fall!
