Wedding Dress Shopping Survival Guide

Pamela and I were both lucky enough to wear the wedding dresses of our dreams on our wedding days.  I think we can both attest to the fact that while we first envisioned a picture-perfect shopping experience, dress shopping can be stressful!!  I’ve put together a few tips that can help take your stress level down a few notches, and help you find the perfect dress!
  1. 1. Do not, under any circumstance, try on a dress that’s over budget.  Why put yourself through that?? I had a consultant accidentally put me in a dress that was $1,500 over budget! She panicked when she found out how much the dress was, but thankfully I didn’t love the dress, so crisis averted.  But what if I had loved the dress? It’s not worth the agony of trying to re-work numbers to try to afford a budget-busting dress.  Trust me, you’ll find something at your price point you’ll love; resist the urge, and don’t even try a dress on that falls outside of your price range.
  2. Try on those crazy dresses that you know you’ll never end up buying.  My wildcard dress was a super trendy light purple Hayley Paige dress.  I knew I wasn’t going to wear it down the aisle (I don’t even like the color purple), but I’d seen it in every bridal magazine and thought it was so pretty and unique! I didn’t end up purchasing the dress, but I’m so glad I tried it on!  You only get to be a bride once (if things go according to plan…), so make the most of your shopping experience!
  3. Try on all different silhouettes and fabrics–you’ll be surprised what you end up liking!  For me, I walked into to every store saying I hated tulle skirts; well, guess what? I ended up wearing a huge tulle ball gown and couldn’t be happier with my choice! So try on everything you think you’ll “hate!”
  4. Don’t forget about accessories! My wedding dress was relatively simple. It had a lace top, but the bottom was completely plain.  I almost over-looked my dress, but once the consultant added a blingy belt, hair piece, and veil it looked completely different! Even better, no one else had my combination of accessories, making my wedding look completely unique to me!
  5. Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you want. It’s your day, and only you know what you have envisioned for it.  If you get a pushy consultant trying to convince you to purchase a dress you aren’t happy with–don’t budge! Stand up for yourself and your vision!
